Encanto Golf Course, adjacent to Encanto Park provides a beautiful setting for a morning on the greens. How many golf courses provide lovely greens surrounded by tall palm trees and even taller high rise buildings? Green fees are approximately $50.00 and the course is par 70 with a rating of 69 and slope 111. I’ll be honest; I’m not a golfer so I have no idea what that means. I don't know all the golfing lingo either, although I do enjoy playing golf, but do so only once a year or so because it takes so long.
I think that the Encanto Golf Course has a variety of different rates, depending on the time of year and time of day. In summer afternoons, they used to have a "sun tan" rate that was a bargain.
Encanto golf Course is unusual today for Phoenix because it is green grass everywhere. Golf courses built in the last 20 years have had water restrictions that cause their layouts to be desert courses, with smaller fairways and desert areas to shoot over. Some call it "target golf."
By the way, I should have left a comment to your earlier posts about Encanto Park. I used to take my two boys there when they were little to paddle around on the paddle boats and to go to "Kiddieland."
I did not know until your post that Encanto park was a WPA project. The park is evidence of the lasting benefits done by public works programs in the 1930s to try to get the country out of the Great Depression. If you walk around downtown sidewalks in Phoenix, you can still see some markers on the sidewalks showing that they, too, were built as a WPA project.
I don't know anything about golfing, either, but this sure is a pretty course. I love to drive past Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena nestled next to the Rose Bowl and surrounded by the San Gabriel Mountains. I honestly think half of golfing is just enjoying your surroundings. (It would be like that if I played golf!)
Interesting about the park being WPA funded. It's amazing what the Roosevelt years did for this country at the time and how the benefits are still felt today.
This park is beautiful! I thought Phoenix was in the middle of the desert. ;-)
