Luhrs Tower

When the Luhrs Tower was built in 1929 in downtown Phoenix, it was the tallest building in the city. It is an Art Deco skyscraper built by George Luhrs, a prominent local businessman. It was designed by the architectural firm of Trost & Trost of El Paso Texas.

The construction fence you see in the foreground is part of the new CityScape site. The space will house high-rise office buildings along with retail space and living space.

I think I read somewhere that the Luhrs Tower or Westward Ho were for many years the tallest buildings between Dallas and Los Angeles.

As an Art Deco fan, I simply love this building!

One wouldn't have thought of El Paso as being a place where architects capable of a graceful Art Deco building such as this were located! There are more extant Art Deco buildings in Oakland, CA than anywhere in the Bay Area. The most famous of these is the Paramount Theater.
