Standing Alone

This is a building in east Phoenix that I just don't get.  It's a lone high-rise building in a part of town with no tall buildings.  It was built in 1986 but I couldn't find any information on its original tenant or use.  Today it is an office building housing a number of different tenants.  It's advertised as a great location only 7 minutes from Sky Harbor International Airport.  So I guess if your business requires a lot of travel, it might be a good location.

I found this photo on the leasing company's site.  You can tell from this photo that the building stands above all the other local buildings.  There isn't much in this area over 4 floors high.  This photo also has a great view of Camelback Mountain in the background.

This building looks lonely and out of place. I don't recall seeing this type of architecture before.

That building really does stand out. It's almost surreal seeing a high-rise like that towering over such a low-slung part of Phoenix, but the view of Camelback Mountain is definitely a bonus

It would be fun to have the top floor as an apartment.

I love that view of the mountain, Sharon.

Hmmmm...I bet there's a story here. How did it get around local planning and land use regulations? Surely they restrict building heights in areas like this. (Or maybe not, since it's libertarian Arizona!)

It does stand out.
