Barry Goldwater Memorial

I stopped at the Barry Goldwater Memorial a week or so ago to update my photos.  I did a post about this statue before but it was way back in 2008.  I think it's due for an update.

The statue was sculpted by Joe Beeler who happened to be a friend of Goldwater's when he was living in the town of Paradise Valley.

Goldwater served five terms as a US Senator and ran for President in 1964.

The statue sits in a small park in the town of Paradise Valley.  Not many people stop here so when I was there taking photos I had it all to myself.

  1. Barry Goldwater... he's a blast from the past. Running for president he suggested using low yield atomic bombs in North Vietnam to defoliate forests. That statement messed up any chance of getting elected.

  2. Afraid I have never heard of the guy but then when I was young I never took any notice of politics

  3. Now here's a polarizing figure for sure. At least he lost monumentally -- as will, hopefully, his Republican successor in November.

    The park is pretty, anyway!

  4. You made some nice shots of the sculpture. I have a picture of a sculpture of Joe Beeler on my blog back on April 10, 2015. Kathy left a comment on that post that she was a personal friend of Joe Beeler and his wife. I miss Kathy's blog.

  5. Oh gawd! I lived in Scottsdale when this guy was in his prime. I was part of a group supporting a new newspaper that was anti-Goldwater. Goldwater had enough power that he was able to stop almost all advertising in the new paper and it went under. He was not a nice man. Some people rode around town with a bumper sticker that showed a donkey and the caption, "Goldwater, my a..."

And then that Meacham guy (I think an auto dealer) was wanting to be a politician. He was even worse than Goldwater. You might say they were the antecedents of the present-day Tea Party Poopers.

    Okay, I'm done now.

Thanks for the memories. I think. :)))

  7. He certainly is a blast from the past. He looks rather warm there in the sun! ;-)

  8. Strangely fitting given how chaotic this year is shaping up.

  9. Lowell's memories are interesting to me since I remember that election pretty well, but living in AZ must have been fascinating during that time. AZ has produced some very strong politicians.
