Best laid plans....

I had great plans for Friday.  I was going to take the light rail downtown to get some shots of all the Super Bowl goings on.  I hear there is quite a lot of attractions down there to go along with the NFL experience that is filling up convention hall.  But, Mother Nature had different plans.  I never complain about rain because we can really use it but, this weekend was not the best time to pour it on.

I took a short drive around the Camelback Mountain hills to get these pictures instead.  If you look closely, you can just barely make out the shape of the Praying Monk through the mist.  The Praying Monk is a rock formation on the side of the mountain that I've shown you before here.

When I was headed back home, I spotted these guys strolling across the street in their cowboy gear.  Some of you might think this would be a common sight here in the southwest but, I assure you it is a rare one.  That's why I rolled down the window and took a shot right from the car.

One last photo of what has to be the lamest Super Bowl decoration I've seen.  Yes, those are fake tortillas rolled up in the shape of Roman Numerals.  It is Super Bowl XLIX after all.  Now where's the giant bowl of salsa?

  3. You still managed to get a super diverse selection of shots Sharon.. I love it when you can actually see bad weather rolling towards you, fascinating. So, not a fan of the tortilla as a sculpture hey Sharon :)

  4. This is a fun post, Sharon. I wouldn't have known the Praying Monk was in this photo. The outline is so dim I thought it was just a clump of the fog/mist/cloud that was on the mountain. The Tostitos display is a hoot. Surely this wasn't a creation of the Frito-Lay organization. The photo of the cowboys was also quite a find. I never saw a real life cowboy in the almost 40 years I lived in Phoenix except maybe at a rodeo. I remember one time being in Young, AZ, north of Globe and seeing two cowboys in chaps eating at a small restaurant. Their horses were tied to a hitching rail out front. I supposed they were hands at a nearby ranch.

  5. I think the shots of the mountain were a good substitute for what you had planned.
The cowboys are a common sight in my part of Arizona....well in my house too. But the chaps are just a tad unusual. Must have been something going on somewhere. I see one of them caught you taking their picture.

  7. This is most interesting series. Don't think I've ever seen Camelback cloud-shrouded like that but then it's been a while and my memory ain't so good!

Love the cowboys. Maybe they thought Dallas was played tomorrow. Maybe they are, come to think of it. I don't have a clue.

  8. I wish I could send you some of our rain (for after the Superbowl!) The cowboys photo is brilliant, so unexpected!

  10. I wanted to go downtown too, but decided not to fight the crowds. I am loving the rainy weather.

  11. But it may be the best time to photograph Phoenix.

Those guys in the third picture look like the all-hat, no cattle crowd.
