Arizona Capitol

Back in July, I went down to the state capitol and took some photos early one morning when the sun was shining directly on the front of the capitol building.  I then played around with my editing software to see if I could get some interesting looks.  I think I liked this one the best.

  1. This is a creative view of the Capitol. One thing I like about this photo is that it draws the eye first to the east facade, then to the clouds, and thereby does not call attention to the ugly, modern Executive Office Building that was built right behind the old Capitol Dome.

Call me old fashioned, but I think that the most prominent feature of a Capitol building should be its dome, not a concrete bunker.

In fact, another good feature of your photo is that the modern House and Senate wings added to each side of the plaza in front of the Capitol are not visible. Those are two additional modern office buildings whose facades facing east lack any windows at all.

Compare the State Capitol modern buildings to the new Phoenix City Hall. Which is more uplifting and inspirational? And doesn't our Arizona State Government need some uplift and inspiration?

Don't get me started about that.

  3. It reminds me of an old black and white that color was added to. Neat. Happy Friday!

  6. It's almost other-worldly looking. I like it. After reading Dave's comment,I am wondering what it would look like if you just erased that building in the back.....hmmmm....interesting.

  7. I like what you did with this picture! I have pictures of the Florida capitol on my blog this week and we have a similar, although much taller, modern capitol building directly behind the older historic capitol and I have never liked the way it blocks the western view of the old dome.

  9. This has been interesting, reading the comments by Dave and Lois. State capitol buildings have had some plastic surgery over the years, and some is not very attractive. In Connecticut, they did a decent architectural job, but it was horrendously expensive. I need to take pictures some time this fall.
