I have two more historic neighborhoods today. The first is the Oakland neighborhood located very near downtown Phoenix. It was a working class neighborhood with strong ties to the Southern Pacific Railroad. The houses are mostly bungalows and Spanish Colonial Revival houses.
In addition, this vintage apartment building is also located in the neighborhood.
The Phoenix Homesteads neighborhood has a little different history. It started as a subsistence farming housing project built during the Depression under a Farm Security Administration program. All of these projects used indigenous materials and this neighborhood is one of the few remaining of these properties and the only adobe neighborhood in Phoenix. All of the original homes were built by WPA Workers.
One thing that really struck me about this neighborhood was the tree lined streets. We don't usually see big tall trees like this lining streets here in Phoenix,
While driving around here, I saw something unusual sitting on the patio of one home so I zoomed in to see what it was. A dinosaur in a hat is not something you see every day.
That dinosaur with the Chinese figure did it for me, brilliant
ReplyDeleteThose trees are amazing. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteLove the third house down Sharon, it has a lovely relaxed feel to it, although the ivy could be a bit of a worry :) Wonder if the happy dinosaur is a Halloween leftover?
ReplyDeleteLovely place, the dinosaur made me laugh...
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see the different architectures.
ReplyDeleteThis is a most interesting post. I remember some old neighborhoods but I can't identify these. Thanks for the historical notes. Got to say that dino is delightful, and I can tell the Chinese gentleman is trying hard not to laugh! There's got to be a story there!
ReplyDeleteLove the dino!
ReplyDeleteThe third shot's my favourite, but yes, you don't see dinosaurs with hats very often!
ReplyDeleteI really like the two first houses but oh wow, that street is so beautiful! M'not a huge fan of dinosaurs and am wondering if that statuesque Chinese is a copy of the great army?
ReplyDeleteThe trees make that a wonderful street! I like all the houses you showed today, Sharon!
ReplyDeleteA dinosaur in a hat next to a Chinese soldier makes for a very interesting combination. I like the houses, but feel sad they all seem to be fenced in. Is it so dangerous there?
ReplyDeleteVery unusual indeed with this line of trees, a very welcoming neighborhood and everything seems to be done to stay clean and healthy.
ReplyDeleteI do like the nagging dinosaur.
I think that I could move into that top adobe home and be very happy.
ReplyDeleteLovely little house on top and I love the covered walls with vine of the house in the 3rd pic.
