The Bikini Cocktails

On the grittier side of downtown Phoenix you can find the The Bikini Cocktails billed as the valley's original Tiki bar.  They've been pouring tiki-themed drinks since 1947.  I understand they still draw a big crowd especially on First Friday Art Walk nights.  I guess I should check this one out sometime too.  I haven't had a tiki-themed drink since Trader Vic's closed it's doors here in Phoenix.

  1. To be honest, I'd probably be more likely to check this place out than yesterday's. I love some good kitsch and this looks like the place for it!

  4. Oh, this looks fun. Drink umbrellas and orchids and Mai-Thais, I'm guessing!

  5. Tiki bars and Tiki drinks are a Florida specialty. I think some of the Seminoles to the south still live in Tiki huts. :)

  6. Ah, Trader Vics. Not in Phoenix but I real many evenings in Chicago at that establishment. What was the drink containing a gardenia? I proudly wore them, walking out of TV's after an evening there

  7. I don't think I've ever had a tiki-themed drink. Does a Pina Colada count?

  8. There must be something wrong with my brain. I don't ever remember seeing this place in Phoenix and I certainly don't remember a Trader Vic's, although I know I went to one in Dallas back in the '60s or '70s. Maybe I've just lost some brain cells along the way!

  13. We used to have a Trader Vic's. There is a phony corporate Irish bar and restaurant in the space now.

This looks like it would be more at home in LA than PHX.

  14. Tiki bars used to be somewhat common, but they have gone away most places I know up north. BUT, you want a tiki bar, come visit southwest Florida!
