Theme Day: Details

For the October theme, I chose some of the architectural details of our State Capitol building starting with the wind vane on top of the building.  It is an actual wind vane that turns on its pedestal with the changing winds.  It was fashioned after Nike, the Greek Goddess of victory.  In the wild west days, cowboys would shoot at her winds just to see it turn.

Above the entrance to the building there is some very fancy scroll work that is quite attractive.  It's just about the only thing attractive about our rather plain capitol building.  You can see a photo of the whole building here.

  1. That's a neat closeup of the top. You've covered the theme well here.

  4. I think that is a reproduction of the Winged Victory that is one of the top features in the Louvre, also called the Winged Victory of Samothrace.

(I know this because in my office I have a reproduction of this statue about a foot or so high that was an award I received years ago.)

  5. I do love this wind vane but I would never have thought that's what it was. Funny about the cowboys. I can see them in my mind, a bit drunk, shooting away!

    Great post and great photo!

  11. I love that statue -- er, weathervane. You caught the moment just right. The sun is illuminating her perfectly and you have just about as rich a sky as there is. Bravo!

  17. You may remember that my favorite courthouse architect who designed many of the fabulous 1890s courthouses here in Texas, James Reilly Gordon, was also the architect for the Arizona State Capitol.
