Cotton

I've mentioned the 5 C's on this blog before.  If you grew up in Arizona you were probably taught about the five C's that drove the Arizona Economy between the 50's and 70's, Copper, Cattle, Cotton, Citrus, and Climate.  Cotton is still a large industry in Arizona as evidenced by this cotton field in south Phoenix.

No matter how many times I've seen these fields, I still marvel at such an interesting plant.

  1. Fantastic! I have never seen a cotton field in person. I especially like the top shot, it's beautiful!

  2. Familiar for you, but I have never seen it either, only in old movies in B&W. Love to see a cottonfield as it is now, thanks.

  3. I have driven by the cotton fields countless times, but have not stopped to examine or photograph the plants up close. Good for you. We have cotton fields on the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian lands that border Scottsdale.

And, of course, Arizona cotton is the source of the name for the high quality "Pima cotton."

  4. The Coachella Valley used to grow cotton, too, and one time I stopped to look at it and I touched one of the blooms and OUCH! I didn't realize that there were THORNS inside! I got a nasty cut!

  7. For a second I thought that was my photo! I have one I posted about 3 weeks ago but had Superstition Mountain in the background. I love San Tan Valley for the rural environment. There is a cotton field very close to where I live.

  9. I remember when there were a lot more cotton fields. Now there are more houses. I like seeing a big field of cotton just ready to pick.
Did you know that Chet picked cotton one year when he was in high school?
He said it was hard and backbreaking work. Now they have big machines that do the picking.

  11. Beautiful view Sharon! Something I'll miss too. The crops seem meager around Chandler.
