McCune Mansion
The McCune mansion was built in the 1960’s by Walter McCune who made his fortune in the oil industry; Pennzoil to be exact. The home has 12 bedrooms, 37 bathrooms, 6 kitchens, a bowling alley, movie theatre, indoor skating rink, recording studio, and a ballroom. It sits on 6 acres of land at the top of a knoll in Paradise Valley. The outdoor amenities include an Olympic size swimming pool, tennis courts, a racquetball court, and a heliport. It went on the market for $25 million in 2007 and is currently listed at $15 million. It apparently needs quite a lot of work to bring it up to date so I would call it the ultimate "fixer-upper." There is a rumor that before the heating and cooling system was updated, the monthly electric bill came in around $17,000.
I'm not interested if it only has 37 bathrooms1
ReplyDeleteI wonder what would happen if everyone flushed at the same time.
ReplyDelete37 bathrooms??? LOL! I wonder what the interiors look like as I always am very curious about the taste of these nouveau riche people... :-)
ReplyDeleteanother mansion i had not heard of. it may be too hard to be able to bring this house up to modern standards but it might make a great assisted living facility with the right remodel. Family could come and stay and visit people and stay on site. Otherwise how does a person afford that high of an electricity bill and 37 bathrooms. what were people thinking when they built it
ReplyDeleteI wonder if they bought 37 plungers. If a toilet stopped up, who would want to have to remember which of the 37 bathrooms in which they left the plunger.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, 37 bathrooms! That's decadent and excessive to say the least. There must be one around every corner. It's a shame to see it sitting empty and uncard for though.
ReplyDeleteI too am stunned at the number of bathrooms. I like Julie's idea for the place. Or maybe some kind of resort. I had to gasp at that electric bill!
ReplyDeleteThe rich really are different than the rest of us. How could you even imagine such a place and actually living in it. Talk about conspicuous consumption!
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could talk to the realtor and tell him/her you're interested...and you could take a tour and take lots of interior photos? :-)
Had to laugh about the number of bathrooms, which has intrigued all of the bloggers who are commenting. I wonder what possesses people who have places like this built for themselves. The height of excessive consumption.
ReplyDeleteI used to play in this home when I was around 8 yrs old in the 70's we would swim in the master bath tub, ride around in the automatic wardrobe closet, the ultimate play ground. Also got to be there when a movie was filmed there,it also had a 42 car garage,Grand bedrooms and a dead piece of coral tree in the main entry.I used to ride my big wheel all the way down the driveway to the main gate lots of fun many memories!

I currently work in the house and can tell you that it does NOT have 37 bathrooms. For listing purposes, it had take into account the two locker rooms (male and female) near the pool which have 5 toilets each. Each bedroom has it's own bathroom, and there are a few extra for guests. Also, there is no bowling alley. I'm not sure where that rumor started, but it definitely does not exist.
ReplyDeleteThe home is absolutely amazing and the Hormel's are extremely generous and kind. This mansion is listed #11 (right after the White House) on the largest historical homes list on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_historic_houses_in_the_United_States). It will be an amazing bargain for the right buyer.
