I saw this desert spiny lizard on one of my spring time walks at the Desert Botanical Garden. It has a very distinctive blue patch on its back and I wondered why. I have a book about common reptiles and it says that male lizards have a blue patches on their bellies and throats and sometimes purple patches on their backs. I've photographed many of these lizards but this is the first one I've seen with such a distinct patch of blue/purple on its back. It certainly attracted my attention.
What a magnificent lizard. Nature is full of surprises.
ReplyDeleteI never dreamed they had markings like this. It's surprise for me.
ReplyDeleteWhere dragons come from
ReplyDeleteThat is a surprise.
ReplyDeleteFlashy guys.
ReplyDeleteYou should almost think he had hurt himself and got a bruise, like we do...
ReplyDeleteVery unusual.
ReplyDeleteMaybe he's in heat-
ReplyDeleteWow! That's great! It's really striking.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen a lizard that size before, we get geckos and skinks here but they have been tiny
ReplyDeleteStriking is definitely the word.
ReplyDeleteThat blue skin patch seems like a giant bruise to me. Beautifully modelled for your capture!
ReplyDeleteThis is a first for me. The lizards I see don't have any blue on their backs.
ReplyDeleteSome kind of error at birth. lol
