A Patch of Blue

I saw this desert spiny lizard on one of my spring time walks at the Desert Botanical Garden.  It has a very distinctive blue patch on its back and I wondered why.  I have a book about common reptiles and it says that male lizards have a blue patches on their bellies and throats and sometimes purple patches on their backs.  I've photographed many of these lizards but this is the first one I've seen with such a distinct patch of blue/purple on its back.  It certainly attracted my attention.

You should almost think he had hurt himself and got a bruise, like we do...

I've never seen a lizard that size before, we get geckos and skinks here but they have been tiny

Striking is definitely the word.

That blue skin patch seems like a giant bruise to me. Beautifully modelled for your capture!

This is a first for me. The lizards I see don't have any blue on their backs.
