Perched on Top of a Cactus

I grew up in the midwest and it seemed like the birds in that part of the country relied on electrical wires and telephone poles to get that broad view of things.  Here in the desert, they use tall cactus.  This Gila Woodpecker has found a good vantage point on top of a saguaro cactus.

And this pretty white-winged dove has got a good spot on top of another cactus.

And this curved-billed thrasher is watching things from the top of this very prickly cactus.  We humans are very careful around cactus so that we don't get stuck by one of those sharp thorns.  The birds don't let the thorns bother them at all.  They seem to embrace them.

You would think their little feet would get pricked by the thorns.
