After yesterday's post, I thought I'd offer a few matchbooks from my own collection. I've been collecting them for.....well....let's just say many, many years.
I keep them in a large glass vase that I tipped over just to grab a few to photograph. There are quite few in here from places that don't even exist any longer. Collecting matchbooks is one of those lost arts because no one really has matches any longer since smoking is no longer acceptable inside any building. I don't think I've thrown a new matchbook into this jar for a very long time.
Neat collection!
ReplyDeleteI used to ask everyone to send me postcards from a new place. I have a big box full of them and always wanted to make a collage for my wall. Maybe I should dig that out!
Bibendum! Les Deux Magots! I see several places there I recognize. As you know, I saved restaurant matchbooks for years as well, and I still have mine -- but like you, I haven't added to the collection in a long time. I wonder if we have any matchbooks in common? I bet we do!
ReplyDeleteWith the shortage of new matchbooks I guess one could say this hobby is burnt
ReplyDeleteout.
You have quite a collection!
ReplyDeleteThat is great fun! I'd love to go through those to see if the places they represent are still in business. But, you're right. I haven't even seen a matchbook in years!
ReplyDeleteNice collection of matchbooks, Sharon !
ReplyDeleteI see a couple that I recognize in there.
ReplyDeleteWow, that is quite impressive.
ReplyDeleteArtistic work on many of them and probably many good memories.
I probably have a grand total of three or four matchbooks.
ReplyDeleteYou are right - they have disappeared. I guess smokers all use lighters these days.
ReplyDeleteOh, Ambrosino's! I used to go there back in the day with a boss who liked to treat. Great Italian food and we always wound up with a flaming glass of Sambucca with three coffee beans in it.
ReplyDeleteOh, and Trader Vic's! Lots of great memories from that place (the original one) too.
ReplyDeleteA photo that gives us a clue of your very active social life. Few smokers anymore, tho, so matches dissappear. Have a good week-end!
ReplyDeleteNever really given it any thought as to matchbooks or boxes for that matter, not being a smoker means I don't use them
ReplyDeleteWe used to do that. We let it fall away and I wish we had kept it up. We used to have one from - what's that place in Tucson where they cut your tie off if you dare to wear one?
ReplyDeleteSo funny, I collect them too and I don´t know anybody personally, who´s is collecting this too. These are great memories from travels and I must say, that sometimes I took a few just t have something to swap in case. I have one from the Grand Canyon btw. But in these days it is harder to get one here in Europe, because of the smoking bans everywhere. Your collection is hige, isn´t it?!
