Rare Sight

I spotted this fellow on a palm tree in Tempe a while ago and had to get a shot.  According to my "Birds of Arizona" book, it's an Acorn Woodpecker.  I don't think I've ever seen one before.  He's a handsome fellow.

  5. This is a great shot of a delightful bird. We lived on the 2nd floor of a condo in Ft. Lauderdale and our window looked out at about this height to a similar looking palm, and the woodpeckers drove us crazy. They loved that palm tree!

  6. The colours remind me a bit of a pileated woodpecker.

  7. I think this fellow is much flashier than the Pileated Pecker of Wood. I used to see them frequently in Phoenix and seems they had striped coats.

  8. Oh, wait, I was thinking of the Gila Woodpecker.

  9. It must be fun to be a birder, esp when a bird like this is spotted. Great photo of the bird with the background of the tree.

  10. An acorn woodpecker is new to me. Congrats on getting the photo. I find that woodpeckers flit around a lot and make it hard to photograph them.
