Encounter with a Bison

I encountered this life sized copper bison on the art walk at the River Trading Post in Scottsdale.  It is the creation of Mark Fischer of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin.  This beautiful masterpiece took Mark 1800 hours of work to complete.  It truly is an amazing piece of craftsmanship.  You can see more about Mark Fischer here.

  1. Ancient Dignity is such a perfect title for this sculpture Sharon. Oh my, all that work! So rewarding though for the artist to see the reactions to that amazing creative process!

  2. Now this bison I wouldn't mind seeing up close. I've love to touch his curly "hair"!

  3. It's really quite amazing how expressive this thing is! It almost looks like a real bison when you look into its face. I wouldn't want to run into it, though, as that might set off a chain of events which would take all the powers of the Man of Steel to stop! :)

  7. I admit to loose associations. All I can think of is Sam The Sham and the Pharaohs' 60s hit Wooly Bully.

  8. That is an excellent piece of art! I went to your link on the artist, and I found his story of "Hugging a Bison" to be particularly touching. Displaying at Indian Market in Santa Fe is a terrific experience!! Since the artist is of the Oneida Nation of WI, I wonder if he is from the reservation near Green Bay, WI? I used o baby-sit for a family with relatives who lived there and I often accompanied them when they visited relatives. I need to find the artist's bio now.
