I wondered what this man was doing sitting in the park on such a hot summer day.
So I walked around to take a peek and found that we was playing cards all by himself.
The sculpture is called "Setting up the competition" by J Seward Johnson Jr.
At first glance, I really did think someone was sitting at the table.
'He' is very lifelike!
ReplyDeleteFully focused! He is lucky not to be concerned with the heat.
ReplyDeleteIn Miami the table would be filled with Cubans playing something or other...It's a great sculpture.
ReplyDeleteMaybe he is waiting for some better cards.
ReplyDelete... this way you always have a winning hand.
ReplyDeleteI like this kind of life like sculpture. It's just fun to see.
ReplyDeleteI like the top composition, Sharon.
ReplyDeleteI really like these kind of sculptures and they are something that everyone can relate to!
ReplyDeleteAt the Grounds for Sculpture in NJ Seward Johnson has displayed several of his 'painting recreations'. Check out this page:

All the photos you see are pics of his life size sculptures. They are glorious. I have stood in several of those creations. The Boating Party is a wonder, he has included what Renoir would have put into the painting if he had the space.
I love it there. Plan to visit sometime the whole place is fantastic. Search around the web sight for more.
Roseann, Thank you for the information above. I went to the site and enjoyed the tour. I then went to Flickr and searched for "Grounds for Sculpture" to see photos taken by others. Wow, what great things are there. I really need to make my way there one of these days soon. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteLovely sculpture, I would like to play with him :)
ReplyDeleteWe have a couple of his forms in our county......have a great weekend! Peace, Mary Helen
ReplyDeleteFirst I thought he was playing the piano instead of the card. Nice pictures.
ReplyDeleteGreetings,
Filip
He's cheating! Wonder where his opponent was.
ReplyDeleteThose Johnson people sure get around, don't they? They are the sculptural equivalents of Chihuly's.
ReplyDeleteThat's fun!
ReplyDeleteLove it. Were you really fooled?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sharon.
ReplyDeleteHe has a perfect spot for his game.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great spot to be sitting for evermore Sharon, I love these type of sculptures we have a few around Perth also.
