Text Message
For at least 15 years of my career, I was traveling to different locations for a variety a projects I was involved in. I will be honest, I loved every minute of it. The only downfall was a lot of meals at restaurants on my own. I've always been a self-assured person, so dining alone was never a problem for me. However, when I started on this high-flying career, cell phones weren't part of the picture and dining alone was really on-my-own. Now, dining alone is never really alone. Last night, I had dinner at a restaurant all by myself but, I was never far from friends via text messages. It made me think how greatly things have changed. I can dine alone but, I'm not really alone. I'm having lively conversations with friends while I'm dining.
I have to tell you that when this whole "text message" idea struck me, I had to ask the waiter to take this picture for me. Bravo to him for accepting the challenge and doing a great job of getting exactly what I wanted.
Smart phone are changing the world.
ReplyDeleteAnd you can "talk" and eat at the same time without worrying about chewing with your mouth open. Julie and I look forward to dinner with you this weekend the old fashioned way -- at the same table.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Sharon!
ReplyDeleteThings have really evolved very fast in what concerns technologies. This photo is really cool and shows the difference between now and then in just 8 years: https://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?fbid=555336131153088&set=a.162132393806799.30950.155869377766434&type=1&theater
Hope you can see it after logging in on Facebook.
Super idea for a post Sharon, I remember when I totally refused to have a mobile, now I can't live without it..I'm still not sure if that's a good thing :)
ReplyDeleteWell done, and I think your photo is merely a harbinger of the changes still to come.
ReplyDeleteYou are very creative!
Me again, Sharon. I ran across this article yesterday about how climate change is affecting and will affect the Phoenix area.
ReplyDeleteWhen I went to high school in Phoenix in 1951-52, the population of the area was about 150,000. Kind of a sleepy little town.
I'd be interesting in your reaction to the article if and when you have time.

OK, was this before or after I talked to you? Of course you have to call me at home because I never turn on my cell phone. And I don't text.
ReplyDeleteLove this picture. Kudos to you for setting it up for someone else to actually take - impressive! :)

My phone is so old...we do not text...but you are such a cutie! I can not wait to meet you! Peace, Mary Helen Fernandez Stewart
ReplyDeleteYou are exactly right, you're never alone with a mobile phone! Great job by the waiter too!
ReplyDeleteCan't text but have the phone on all the time for calls!
ReplyDeleteHi Sharon...yes, I didn't mean to scare you, but things do seem to be getting more serious what with global warming. I do remember discussions about water supply many years ago - in the early 60s, but the problem didn't seem so urgent.
ReplyDeleteThere are probably some answers but I'm not our politicians are smart enough to find them! :-)
Nice idea and nice shot, Sharon, I'm often in the same situation...
ReplyDeleteHe took a nice shot.
ReplyDeleteI spent a lot of time dining by myself when I worked in Ohio during the week for six years. Most of the time was at a restaurant's bar. If I couldn't find someone to talk with at the bar, out came the phone, but the best times were talking to people sharing the bar with me.
ReplyDeleteI do remember the time (a little bit over a year now) when our sons did not want me to use my phone in public (it had a little antenna ans was pretty old...) :-)
ReplyDeleteNow I don't know how I would do without this new phone technology!
Perfect picture for a "dinner with a partner."
I'm not all that big on texting but I do send lots of emails from my smart phone. (I see texting isn't in the Google spell-check yet. Interesting.)
ReplyDeleteTechnology is changing so much that it is breathtaking.
