Arizona State University, West Campus

While I was on the northwest side of town last weekend, I decided to stop at the ASU west campus to see if there was anything interesting to photograph.  I found these metal gates gracing the main entrance to the campus.  They were designed by sculptor Albert Paley in 1991.  Paley has been a sculptor for 30 years creating all kinds of architectural features.  In fact, he won a highly coveted Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Institute of Architects.  It's the only award they have given to a non-architect and it was given for is gift of combining art with architecture.

When you step through those gates, this is the view to the main entrance of the campus.

  2. At first, I didn't see the gates, but when I enlarged it, I had an "oooo...ahhh" moment. I can see why he has won a lifetime achievement award

  3. Interestingly appealing ironwork, would love to see gates closed.

  4. See how you're able to find beauty wherever you go. :) I hope the students who walk through these gates appreciate them. Looking at the second picture, one would find it hard to believe that's taken in the desert in a drought.

  6. Opening a gate often reveals something interesting, and this one does. The main entrance is beautifully landscaped and inviting.

  10. Hi Sharon,

The gate looks pretty neat. It's also quite amazing how a non-architect can be given an architectural award. He must have really impressed them.

That is a nice view as soon as you walk in as well.
