Arizona Beach

This is an art installation called “Arizona Beach” by Hirotsune Tashima.  Located inside the newest building of the Phoenix Convention Center, it is comprised of several stoneware ceramic sculptures depicting people engaged in various activities alongside desert animals and plants.  The artist notes that it is supposed to point to the power of growth and encourage people to live fully.  Mr. Tashima studied art in both Japan and the United States and currently teaches Ceramics at Pima Community College in Tucson Arizona.

  2. Nice work...there is so much detail! Esp on woman's shirt and palm trees. At first, I thought the gal in the sand was sinking in quick sand! But I suppose they are in water since the man has a water ring?

You're right about the mimosa and fairy duster. They must be related!

  4. This man is a true artist. "Living fully" is what I'm trying to do! The detail on the sculptures is amazing, but I wonder what he adds to the sand to keep it from drying and crumbling? When in Mazatlan during the winter, I always loved seeing the sand sculptures, but none of them could compare with these.

  5. I think that would be a very bizarre beach to hang out at.

  6. Very interesting and creative. One could say, I guess, that southern Arizona is pretty much one big "beach."

I do recall that Tempe had built some kind of water park with beach...I wonder if that is still in operation?

  8. This is an interesting piece of artwork and kind of fun too. The artist has a great imagination. Sorry Steffe, but I don't think the girl is naked. :)

  9. I particularly like the detail work on the cacti. A bit of a strange piece I guess but gets people thinking!

  10. For people who think that Arizona will have a beach after California splits off into the ocean, this shows what the beach would be like.

  11. This one is great. Like Steffe, I like naked women in the sand, but I clicked on the pic and she is wearing a bikini. Still . . .

  12. @Jack, I believe that maybe she is naked under the sand. I guess we will never know ;)
