This giant silver spur frames one of the entrances to the Stockyards Restaurant, a Phoenix landmark since 1947.
Last summer, I told you the story of Tovrea Castle and the the Tovrea Cattle Company located nearby. You can see that post here. The Stockyards restaurant was part of that legacy. The cattle company was formed in 1919 and the restaurant was added in 1947. I can’t for the life of me find any reference to that date over the door, “Since 1889”.
Tomorrow I’ll show you a scene from the inside.
There certainly is a lot of history connected to that place. There must be some more information hiding in archives somewhere re. that date. Do any of the employees know?
ReplyDeleteSaying "since 1889" might refer to the date cattle were first on the site. Phoenix was not even founded until about 1880, when some people decided to put water back into the ancient NAtive American canals and farm in the Valley to grow food for the miners near Prescott.
ReplyDeleteThe canal system runs right by the Stockyards location, as displayed at the Pueblo Grande Museum site located just a few blocks away.
that spur looks a little daunting.
ReplyDeleteGreat steaks as I recall.
ReplyDeleteThat is one place I never visited. Great spur!
ReplyDeleteHow unusual! I love it!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it! So much fun.
ReplyDeleteIt makes a perfect entry for a place with that name! I don't think I have ever been inside.
ReplyDeleteThat is a fascinating entrance, but the sharp points on the spur are VERY scary. I read your previous post about the castle. Quite a story.
ReplyDeleteThat's got to be one of the coolest doorways I've ever seen. Love it! Sparkling, sharp, and unique!
ReplyDeleteI'd eat there just because of the entrance!
Nice light in this shot, too.
Somehow the entrance decorations reminds me wagging dog's tail.
ReplyDeleteSmth wrong with me today))
Now, that's a spur!
ReplyDeleteI only ate at that restaurant for the first time a couple of years ago. Is the castle still closed to the public? I know they did a big renovation and then didn't have the money to open it back up or something. (And you know "Spurs" is a dirty word in Phoenix. LOL.)
ReplyDeleteBetter hope that spur is mounted up there real good! :)
ReplyDeleteI hope it's attached well!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic idea!
ReplyDeleteAt the Arizona Historical Museum in Papago theirs a photo of Tovrea surrounded by cattle lots. Great picture.
