This tiny little deli has been in business in midtown Phoenix for about 60 years. In addition to a very large menu of just about any kind of sandwich you can think of, it also carries a very large stock of cheeses from all over the world and imported food products you won’t find anywhere else. In spite of its tiny size, there are a few tables inside for in-house dining and counter service for the carry-out crowd.
I love the great 1950’s style neon sign on the front of the building and oh yes, the sandwiches are great!
I like that sign on top. Very retro.
ReplyDeleteI used to work in an office building about a block away and ate there many times. It is a family business, and when school was on vacation they wold have their daughter, who was maybe 12 or 13 at the time, work the cash register. She would be dressed up in a little dress, was very polite and proper, etc. It was charming.
ReplyDeleteLittle delis like this one are some of my favorite places.
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me, though, of a little shop where my mother bought horse meat to feed our family back in the early 1950s. Horse meat was sold in several places in Phoenix at the time and was legal.
We lived, if I remember correctly, around 7th Ave (St?) and Thomas Rd...
She didn't tell us for a long time we had been eating horse meat. I thought it was just rather tough beef.
My sister and I weren't happy when she finally confessed...and I don't think she did it again.
But we had very little money. A five-cent ice cream cone was a big treat!
It remindes me of "Delicatessen" the movie. Nice shot!
ReplyDeleteOMG they have the best sandwiches here! Now you've got me thinking about the pizza at "Z" Pizza on Thomas. Is it still there?
ReplyDeleteI love this place and the father and son team who runs it. A very cool, small deli filled with all types of interesting options. It reminds me of being in New York. I love the cheese sandwiches at this deli.
ReplyDeleteHow strange that it looks like Satriale's, the store Tony Soprano and his gang hung out in front of.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a great place. I's stop there after a lengthy bike ride for a chicken baguette.
ReplyDeleteI love the 50s look! Glad it's still standing!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like the type of place that would have wonderful wonderful sandwiches!
