This Victorian home built in 1895 was part of the original Phoenix town site. It’s located in the heart of downtown Phoenix and has become part of Heritage Square, a collection of restored turn of the century homes located adjacent to the Arizona Science Center. Originally it was the home of Dr. and Mrs. Roland Lee Rosson and its construction set them back a total of $7,525.00. It was purchased by the city in 1974 and is now open for tours and as a setting for weddings.
Tomorrow I’ll show you a restaurant also located in Heritage Square that has received national recognition.
I have not been insie the Rosson house for at least 20 years. I recall that at least some of the rooms have pressed tin ceilings that the tour guide said were purchased from a catalog.
ReplyDeleteThe size and architecture of the Rosson house is more impressive when one considers that Phoenix was not settled until the 1870's and was not incorporated as a town until 1881. It is a substantial house to have been built so early in the town's existence. I think Dr. Rosson was an early mayor of Phoenix.
I am looking forward to your post tomorrow, as I can anticipate the restaurant that you plan to show.
wow amazing its right in the heart of downtown
ReplyDeleteIt's just like from a fairytale! your houses are sooo different to ours.
ReplyDeleteI liked your shot of the prickly pears, we have loads here in Malta and we eat the fruit raw just peeled off the skin. What one does is pick the fruit before sunrise as the prickles are still lying back and then soak the fruit in water to remove the prickles, slit the skin and peel off the fruit by hand. You still have to be extra careful.
It's gorgeous! Does it have Victorian furniture in all the rooms too?
ReplyDeleteOh I love this house! Looks like they could do some sort of spooky outdoor setting for Halloween, too.
ReplyDeleteLooks a bit like the Addams Family home, doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteI'm not being funny but this gives me the creeps, it looks haunted!
ReplyDeletenever think of phoenix of having houses like this!

ReplyDeleteLovely old house. There's one a lot like this in character in Pretoria, now preserved and restored, known as the ghost house because several of the original owners contracted leprosy and when they died the house stood empty fot many years...
