Founded in 1881, St. Mary’s Basilica is the oldest Catholic church in the city of Phoenix. It’s location in the heart of downtown Phoenix, sometimes makes it hard to spot among the towering office buildings, but it’s worth searching out. During his 1985 visit to the United States, Pope John Paul II proclaimed it to be a minor basilica. St. Mary’s is on the National Historic Register and is also a Phoenix Point of Pride.
At the risk of stirring up some controversy, I will point out that there is another Roman Catholic church just a few blocks away because long ago Latinos were relegated to the basement of St. Mary's Basilica. They therefore built a nearby church where they would be welcome everywhere.
ReplyDeleteToday, the Latino community is a mainstay of support for the Roman Catholic church in Phoenix (including St. Mary's), and the Church leaders are supportive of Latinos.
How ironic, though, that years ago Americans admired Hispanic culture so much that we copied their architecture when building churches and other public buildings, but then discriminated against Hispanic people.

ReplyDeleteAround The World with Daily Photoblogs Old and New is a brief history of the City Daily Photoblog movement and a guide to sites around the world.
This guide is independent of the CDPB lists. Inclusion here does not imply that a blog qualifies for nor is officially a CDPB. Our criteria are that photographs mainly from a specific geographical location (not necessarily a "city" but usually more specific than a whole country or region) are posted at dated intervals (not necessarily daily), and archives are searchable by date.
