Save the Portico
I took the top two photos in September of 2014 when I went for a walk around the Biltmore Estates. I thought it was interesting how the house had been completely torn down but the pink portico was preserved.
I took another walk in the same location last week and I saw that construction was going on to build a new house and it is being attached to the old portico.
As you can see from this photo, it's going to be a very big house. It makes me wonder what the significance is of that front portico. Do you suppose it has some sort of sentimental value? I'll be sure to remember to check on it again so I can show you the completed house when it's done.

Interesting that the portico is being saved. Wonder if there is some legal reason behind that?
The rich certainly knew/know how to live. I guess. I didn't think one could get near the Biltmore Estate...very interesting!
I'm glad it is being saved Sharon, I think the old portico will add character to the big house. Will be interesting to see the results!
That's a HOUSE? Looks more like a hotel!
Probably just a second home - a "cottage" to spend the winter months in. ;-/
In the UK I would say it was listed to you could not pull it down, not sure what you have in the US, could be the owner liked the feature and wanted to keep it
There must be some reason behind it.
It is a very nice portico...
I wouldn't be surprised to find out it was a zoning issue. If they tore it down they may not have been able to rebuild something in the same location. Happens here all the time.
I'd have kept it too, it's rather nice! That house is huge!
I grow weary of house tear downs that then replace the structure with one of even larger size.
My guess would be that they just really liked the old portico and wanted to preserve some of the history of the old house. I don't blame them. It's beautiful!
Very odd. The cynic in me thinks there is some tax game being played, but the kinder answer would be that they just like the portico.
