Icicles in Phoenix

I looked over at this fountain on my drive home from work yesterday and did a double take.  Is that icicles I see?  I went around the block to check it out and sure enough, there were icicles in the fountain!  This is rare sight for Phoenix.

You know it's a brutal winter when Phoenix has icicles!

I am stunned that there were icicles in Phoenix, especially in the day. When I got in my car in central Phoenix last night about 9:00 p.m. it was 39 degrees, and by the time I reached Scottsdale about 20 minutes later it was 36 degrees. I fear for the survival of our tropical plants, which I know is a silly and frivolous concern for people being blanketed by snow and severe cold.

Wow! Try to stay warm!!!

Disappointing. Those in the snowbelt like to dream about Phoenix as an escape.

I don't think that Dave's comments were frivolous because the eco system is important in all parts of the country. Stay warm, tho!!

Next thing you know hell will freeze over too. Not something you see that often there. Like snow. Have a good day Sharon.

Brrrr...but you know, I remember temps in the teens when we lived there. I lived there in the early 1950s and worked as a newspaper carrier (mornings) and I can remember huddling around a big old can with a fire burning in it on a corner as we folded our papers...

I also remember in the early 60s when Lois and I moved back there, how, on occasion I'd have to cover the front of our car in the carport 'cause the temps were going to be below freezing...

Don't remember any icicles, though.

What time of day is this? My bird bath has frozen over the last two mornings. I brought what plants I could under the patio and still covered them.

Magpie, This was about 5:30 or 5:45 last evening! I think the wind had a lot to do with this because the actual temperature was not below freezing at that time but, the wind was blowing very hard.

I'm not surprised at this after the day we had yesterday. I just about froze just walking from the parking lot into the library. Our birdbath did not thaw out all day. I heard on the news that it was
-64F on top of the San Francisco Peaks with the wind chill last night. Yikes!

Rare indeed! How strange to see them with palm trees!

We had icicles, too...but nothing major. Only a few snow flurries.

Stay warm!!!

I enjoy looking at your daily pictures because in my mind that is where I belong. This is the winter that will not give us a break - we did not even get a January thaw. Connecticut National Guard is cleaning off roofs.

The icicles are hanging everywhere too - while gorgeous they are deadly. When you get your warmth back - send some to the east coast please.

Great shot but I am amazed that it is that cold there. Bundle up!

Ice or not, this is beautifully composed. The water may be frozen but the image shines with warmth and strong solid shapes.

I know, ours is frozen too! Some schools are closed tomorrow because of the freeze. I've never heard of schools closing because it's cold! We're so wimpy in the desert :)

The icicles look so out of place considering the palm trees and warm light in the photo. Fantastic find, Sharon.
