More Highway Art

In September, I featured a story about 1980’s arts project to add a series of artist designed pots along a stretch of new highway inside the city limits. You can read all about it here. I found more remains of those pots in a variety of places along the sound-barrier wall of the freeway. Here is a grouping of the ones I have found so far.

That is so unusual! Glad you have shown it.

I remember that the Phoenix Arts Commission received a lot of criticism over the freeway pots, some of it directed at the art itself, some directed at the use of tax money for the purpose, and some of it directed at the fact that the artist was not from Arizona.

The legacy of the controversy, however, has been constructive. There is now a lot more freeway art throughout the Phoenix metro area, and much of it incorporates southwest designs.

The Phoenix area has some of the best-looking freeway decor that I've seen, & I think it does add something to the quality of life.

My 2 cents.

Mind the traffic when you get these great shots, Sharon... : )

I always liked the pots.

Interesting...these pots are better than most of the freeway art "Louis" sees in the Bay Area.
