The Making of a Judge

Yesterday I had the extreme pleasure of witnessing the investiture ceremony for my friend James D. Smith to be sworn in as a Superior Court Judge.  James is my close friend David's brother.  That is James on the left taking the oath of office from the Honorable Scott Bales, Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court.

The Robing of the New Judge was done by Susan R. Smith, James and David's mother.

My friend David said a few words about James as did several other of James' friends and colleagues.

And then, James addressed the crowd and thanked everyone for coming.  He even have a few classmates from law school who were kind enough to to brave the extreme temperatures of Phoenix in August to attend the ceremony.

Congratulations James!  You are going to make an excellent judge.  All the best to you!

What a chance to have been able to witness such a ceremony amid friends! It must have been such a very proud moment for you all.
I must admit I don’t have much understanding of all the different distinctions but always told myself that the simplest way to deal with it would be to wish never having to appear in such a court…

Wow! That must have been an honor to witness. And speaking of honor, now will you have to call him "Your Honor"?

Congrats to James! It may not help to know a judge, but it certainly can't hurt!

I've known many judges, most good, some bad. Here's hoping James will be one of the good ones.
