Wisteria!

I didn't know wisteria could be grown in Arizona but, I found some at the Desert Botanical Garden and was certainly surprised to see it thriving.  I found it growing in the herb garden and trailing along a trellis.

I've seen it many times on trips to Europe but, I don't think I've ever seen it anywhere in the United States.  I'm sure they must bloom in the southeast but I don't remember seeing any.  They are such beautiful, draping blooms.  According to the sign, this is Chinese Wisteria.

It's beautiful!
And it's funny that you think of it as a European flower. I have rarely seen it here and think of it as something found more often in North America. :)

So beautiful Sharon.. I'm a little excited because I planted a wisteria for the first time, hopefully ready to flower in spring.
P.s. I must admit I thought of a wheel hub when I saw first sculpture also :)

It certainly is pretty yet it also can be very invasive.

Believe it or not, people turn Wisteria into bonsai trees.

I can't wait for the wisteria here, I love it so much, still about a month to go though (and I probably won't be here when it does bloom)! Lovely photos, super light!

I love it when it flowers here. There are 2 very large plantings of it near me.

A beautiful bloom and we have plenty of wisteria growing here in Florida. The Japanese and Chinese versions are considered an invasive plant though, so you have to be careful not to plant those types in your yard.

I had a great opportunity to spend two weeks at the home of an English couple in Cathorne Barnsly, England. the garden was fabulous and we had meals under an arbor of wisteria. What a great memory.

We have TONS of wisteria here! I'm sure anything will grow in Phoenix as long as it has enough water. I love wisteria but it really attracts bees with it's wonderful fragrance and nectar. It's one of the first flowers I remember as a child. My grandmother had it growing along her back fence in the yard! There is actually a giant wisteria that grows in a very tall tree at a house on 7th Ave. in Phoenix, somewhere between Missouri and Maryland as I recall on the east side of the street. It turns the whole tree purple in the early spring.

Does anyone know what variety grows well here in Phoenix?
