Sister City Gift

This statue was a gift to Phoenix from sister city Chengdu China in 1996.  It's called "Giant Panda - Maternal Love".  Chengdu is home to Chengdu Panda Base, a world renowned panda breeding center.
The statue has been placed behind the Phoenix Arts Commission building on the edge a park in downtown Phoenix.

I was at the park on Friday to attend the 2nd annual Phoenix Art Festival. It's not nearly as big as the arts festival in Tempe that I featured last week but it is growing and hopefully will someday be just as big.  After all, Tempe has been doing theirs for many, many years.  I did find a few things to purchase so it was a success as far as I'm concerned.

I have an new post on Sharon's Sojourns today.  Today I'm featuring my favorite Christmas in London photos.

How do people feel about the sculpture? Do they like it? A lot of public art seems to get a chilly reception.

It looks like the art fair was in Margaret T. Hance Park, which is infinitely better than the alternative, as it is located on top of the area where a big interstate highway would have cut a divide through central Phoenix.

You second photo shows what appears to be the main library on the left and the Viad Tower where my office is located, on the right.

The sculpture is try different from what i envision as a panda. Have you visited any of the sister cities?

Steve: I don't recall any controversy over this artwork but, I've heard plenty of controversy over others that have gone up.

Have you been to China? Plan a trip to your sister city for a Sharon sojourn.

We have pandas on loan at our zoo now - they are so popular with everyone. I like the sculpture.

Huge! A very nice statue. What a nice idea for Phoenix to have created an Art Festival. It will bring a few new valuable ideas I am sure to both festivals.

A big art festival would be a lot of fun in the downtown area. I hope I'm not too old and decrepit to enjoy it by the time I return to Phoenix!
