The era of silent movies

On the way into Florence Arizona (see yesterday's post), I stopped at the Tom Mix memorial.  For those of you who don't know, Tom Mix was a star of numerous silent pictures depicting the old west.  Just to be clear, that was way before my time but I know my parents knew who he was.  Mix was killed in an auto accident on this site and this monument was placed here in his memory.  The memorial reads:
January 6, 1880 - October 12, 1940
In Memory of Tom Mix
Whose spirit left his body on this spot and whose characterization and portrayals in life served to better fix memories of the old west in the minds of living men.

A very fitting memorial

Tom Mix was even before my time. His memorial looks like it may need some repair work soon.

I was once a big fan of silent movies but I think I've never heard of Tom Mix.

I'm glad you clarified the age thing Sharon haha! I don't know of him either, but he was obviously very well loved.
p.s. can you believe after my post went up at midnight, this morning the first thing I heard on the news was that George Michael has cancelled his whole Australian tour, so Elton John who was going to be appearing the next night, will do two shows.

The riderless horse captures the mood of his fans.

I remember seeing this memorial. I have a picture of it somewhere. Don't ask me where.

Funny comment. I know the name Tom Mix but not much -- if anything -- about him.

I remember Tom Mix well, but I was quite young when he died so my memories must have to do with his westerns! Nice memorial. Fascinating story about your dad working at the prison. Thanks for sharing that.

I know the name but wouldn't be able to tell you anything about him before now!
