Arizona Road Trip: Bisbee

I mentioned before that there is active mining going on in Bisbee so, today I feature of view of the enormous pit that sits like a giant scar on the side of this mountain.  The mine called the Lavender Pit is currently owned by Freeport MacMoRan Copper & Gold whose headquarters are in downtown Phoenix.  The company is the world’s largest publicly traded copper company.

You describe it well as a "giant scar."

It is called the Lavender Pit? I don't see anything lavender about it. It is definitely a pit.

I see lavender - just not the traditional shade we usually think of. The layers of the clouds certainly complement the layers of the geology uncovered by the mine.

Beautiful colors and layers.
The mine is named after Mr Harrison Lavender...

That is amazing. It's hard to know how to feel. I get the necessity and the economy it provides, but they do seem extreme.

This is an amazing shot, Sharon, but every time I see this kind of scenery I always think 'what are we doing to Mother Earth?'...
