Alien

Doesn’t this look like it might have arrived from some distant planet?  This is a succulent known as Stapelia Grandiflora and as the “grand-flora” name implies, it produces a huge flower that to me looks quite alien.

Very low to the ground it appears but what a brilliant color!

You have the most interesting plants out there in the desert! And very beautiful, too.

Thank you for your thoughts, Sharon. I can't believe there was so much damage and loss of live with not a single reported tornado. Very unusual storm. We personally have no damage, but electricity and tree crews are busy all over town...

Yes, I agree. That's probably the devil...you know, looks so attractive and then sucks you in and you're a goner! You probably ought not get your camera too close to it!

It's very pretty! I don't think I have seen one of these before.

It amazes me how a cactus can look "normal" for a cactus all year, and then all of a sudden it produces large, strange flowers, for a few days, and then they are gone.

Julie and I were away for a few days, staying in a bed and breakfast in Oak Creek, with no TV, no phone and no internet, so I am just now catching up with your last several posts.

Stapelia flowers are amazing! I keep one species only but it's growing everywhere now as each seed pod has hundreds of seeds! :-)
