Where is Phoenix?

On Sunday I took a drive about 40 miles (64 km) west of Phoenix to the White Tank Mountains Regional Park. It is a fairly new park with its visitor’s center still under construction. I took this photo from the top of one of the drives hoping that the haze over the city wouldn’t obscure the Phoenix skyline. That was asking too much. You can just barely make out the downtown Phoenix skyline on the very right of the horizon. That large white building on the center horizon is the University of Phoenix Stadium, the home of the Arizona Cardinals Football team.

The small photo is of one of the picnic areas at the park. For all of you people who live in climates where there is a lot of green, this must look a bit rugged.

It does look rugged but beautifully so.

I have never been to the white tank mountains. I like Usery Pass Park and Lost Dutchman PArk so much that I had not traveled to White tank, but I need to do so. thanks for sharing

Sorry that it was a hazy day and it was difficult to see Phoenix, but when you go to a park like this, isn't one of hte purposes to get away from the city?

I've been going to the White Tanks park for years...it's out our way. The new building being built is a library with the visitors center inside. I used to go to this park years ago before you had to pay to get in and watch the summer storms move across the valley. Lovely!!

Nice views from the top!
Thanks for pointing to the Phoenix skyline in the far right, I managed to see it thanks to your directions.

Yes the scenery looks rugged but beautiful. I assume the picnic tables out in the sunshine can only be used in the cooler months. In summer the heat would be unbearable?

Thanks for your visit in Avignon and your words of support - much appreciated.

Sharon, it may be "rugged" but there's a stark beauty about it that is definitely one of the hallmarks of the remarkable Southwest.

The small pic somehow reminds me of Africa. And yes, I can see Phoenix in the background.
