Historical Gardening

There is an area at the Desert Botanical Garden called the Native American Crops Garden. Along with traditional crops from the Southwestern U.S. and Mexico, it also features examples of Native American structures. Here we had a garden fenced with ocotillo spines and behind it a shade structure made of logs and more cactus spines.

Love the look of the fences in the Southwest.

The fence made of ocotillo spines would do little to keep out marauding javalinas.

So different from anything you'd see up here in New England. Thank you for this shot, Sharon.

It looks very authentic with the stick fence.

I've seen a few of these "spine" fences around town lately. I wonder how they hold up in our monsoon season? (For those who are unfamiliar, that's summer dust/wind/rainstorms -- but mainly wind!)
