I learned at a very young age that it was not acceptable to wear torn and tattered clothing and it was totally taboo to let your underwear show. My how times have changed. I see both men and women wearing clothes, particularly jeans with gaping holes and shredded fabric. In fact, I’ve seen in some stores that you can actually buy them that way.
I know it’s a fashion “thing”. I just don’t know what the message is supposed to be.

The message is probably that they are very cool people. The only problem is that the cool factor disappeared on the day that you could buy the jeans looking this way.
Ha, ha, have to agree with Steffe. Tacky, is what I say. And anyway, I prefer a bit more derriere on my men; this guy's too flat for me!
I agree with both you and Steffe, and the first of the two opinions expressed by Bibi above (and refrain from any comment on the second of her two opinions).
I must be getting old, but I have never understood the wearing of torn clothing, especially if torn in locations such as the photo you showed today. I will have to confess, however, that while in college in the 60's, I did wear my father's World War II era Navy brown leather flight jacket, and it was a little tattered around the sleeves.
I believe fashion these days is trending downward!
Don't you wish you saved all your old ripped and tattered clothes. You could sell them now and be rich.
This is going a bit too far, even for me! I don't mind rips and tears on jeans, but I'd rather they were earned through long, long use. And no underwear showing!

I remember in my hippy day wearing frayed pants, no shoes but I didn't have my bum hanging out the back. He'll grow out of it!
Those ripped jeans in the store cost more than the regular ones. I don't find that attractive but it's not as awful as the ones that wear them hanging down and all the underwear shows on top and they have to hang on to them to keep them from falling off. What is the point of that?
I thought about wearing torn jeans like that, but I don't want to have women chasing me all around -- might start a riot or something. Heheh.
I hate to see things going down the drain when they is still some use in them. I don't understand holes in clothes.

Perhaps the message is that Americans are not as chic as some others, for example, the French!
