Gecko

If you live in a warm climate you are very familiar with this little creature. The gecko lizard is very common with over 2000 species worldwide. They are unique because of the tiny pads on their toes that allow them to climb smooth and vertical surfaces. They can even walk across a ceiling with ease. I spotted this little fellow perched on top of my back fence keeping his eye on me while I watered the plants. People around here are very fond of these little critters. They feed on insects and help to keep that population in check.

You can see this gecko emerging from the seam in my block fence in the small photo. I’ve noticed that many of them live in that crack in the seams all around my backyard fence. I truly enjoy watching them come and go.

We have one who lives in our casita. A little shy, but always around. We've grown quite fond of him.

Sharon,
I hate to be a contrarian (actually, that's not true), but I don't think that is a gecko. He has claws, not pads on his feet. Most geckos have pads, not claws. Also, he is out during the day. Most geckos are nocturnal.

I checked with my son, Stuart, who knows much more about geckos than me. He thinks it is a Plateau Fence Lizard (Sceloporus tristichus), or its relative, a Southwestern Fence Lizard.

Do not feel badly about this correction. I have at times posted photos on my site of what I thought were geckos, only to have Stuart tell me that they are baby iguanas instead.

By the way, the pads on the feet of geckos that enable them to walk on ceilings do not contain suction cups. They have teeny tiny hooks that enable them to hang upside down.

The answer to your question about which cruise ship was in Sydney harbour is on my blog today!

The only pets I have are the lizards, geckos in my backyard. Heck, I love them so much I go back there to talk insurance all the time.
